The Sperrins Region

EMAIL: John O'Neill

Recognised as a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Sperrins is one of the most idyllic geographical areas of rural Ireland.

The Sperrins region is located in the centre of Northern Ireland, stretching from the Western shoreline of Lough Neagh to the Tyrone/Donegal Border. The region incorporates most of the County of Tyrone and the southern portion of County Londonderry and is bordered by the traditional market towns of Cookstown, Limavady, Magherafelt, Omagh and Strabane; and shoulders the ancient walls and monuments of Derry City.

The area’s main focal point is obviously the Sperrin Mountains. These mountains encompass an abundance of natural resources with over twelve forests and a complex network of winding rivers.

The name Sperrin derives from “Na Speirini” meaning “Spurs of Rock” and it is the rocks of the Sperrins and the rolling geography of the area that form the foundation of this very distinct landscape that we see today. These gently rolling Sperrin hills reach a maximum elevation of 678m, at Sawel peak on the Derry/Tyrone border.

The gentle contours of the mountainous Valleys are threaded with rivers, streams, forest lakes and shady glens – with small and quiet country roads that lead to the busy market towns on the periphery of the region.

Sleepy Sperrin villages lie in the heart of these valleys, each their own vibrant hub of rural community life – like Carrickmore, Drumquin, Feeny, Gortin, Plumbridge and Fintona.

The Glenelly Valley, the Owenkillew Valley, the Derg Valley, the Roe Valley, the Bann Valley and the Foyle Valley are all indicative of the ever varying and ever-evolving landscape within the Sperrins. Gloriously scenic and individually attractive, these valleys are not only an artist’s dream – but are home to the plethora of angling, cycling, walking and outdoor pursuit opportunities that the region has to offer; as well as naturally mapping out an array of idyllic touring routes for you to savour and to enjoy.

This is the designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, not to be missed if touring Ireland. There is truly something for everyone and excitement that all the family will delight at.
